Winter & spring television schedule: TV for lovers of horror, sci-fi, paranormal, dark fantasy and suspense.

Lately, a post here at The Paranormalist been doing surprisingly well. Back in August, I provided a run-down of the fall 2013 TV schedule. Every time someone hits on that, I feel guilty because I haven’t done an update. Today I will fix that. Here’s the latest news on the shows I listed last August, AND a summary of what’s happening on TV now and in the upcoming weeks:

NEW / FRESH TELEVISION, COMING THIS WINTER:

Returning: The Following | FOX | Mondays | 9/8c | Season 2 began Jan 20th.
The 3rd episode in season 2 will air Feb. 3rd.
From the homepage:
“Heading into its intense, spellbinding second season, hit psychological thriller THE FOLLOWING will catch up with a healthy and healed RYAN HARDY … a year after the tragic events of last season…”
Season 1, episodes 1- 15, are available on Netflix streaming.
The first episode of season 2 is available via streaming at the homepage. If you provide the name of your TV provider, and your password, you don’t have to wait 8 days from the original broadcast date to stream episode 2. (That’s new to me, but it went smoothly when I tried it.)
My relationship with this one: I’m one episode behind, but it’s recorded. I can’t help but love Kevin Bacon in this.

The first 3 episodes are available via streaming at the homepage.
My relationship with this one: Hadn’t heard of it until researching this article. I’m going to give it a try. The trailer looks interesting.

New: Believe | NBC | Mondays | 10/9c | Premiers March 10th, 2014.
From the homepage:

My relationship with this one: I’ve been seeing the TV spots lately, and they are pulling me in. I’ll be setting the recorder.

UPDATES ON SHOWS PROFILED IN AUGUST:

Haven | Syfy | Fridays | 10/9c | Looks like all 13 episodes of season 4 have aired and a super-sized season 5 is on the way.
Seasons 1-4 are available on Netflix discs.
from the homepage:
“Syfy’s one-hour drama series Haven, starring Emily Rose, is based on the novella The Colorado Kid from renowned author Stephen King. The series follows the shrewd and confident FBI agent Audrey Parker (Rose) as she arrives in the small town of Haven, Maine on a routine case. Before long, her natural curiosity lands her in the epicenter of activity in this curious enclave, which turns out to be a longtime refuge for people that are affected by a range of supernatural afflictions. The truth about Audrey’s mysterious past (which she can’t fully remember) starts to come out as well.”
My relationship with this one: Have not been watching. Plan to marathon it during this summer’s heatwaves.

Sleepy Hollow | FOX | Mondays | 9/8c | All 13 episodes of season 1 have aired and season 2 was greenlighted back in October.
from the homepage:

Revived alongside Ichabod is the infamous Headless Horseman who is on a murderous rampage in present-day Sleepy Hollow. Bound to the Headless Horseman by a blood spell cast on the battlefield of the American Revolution, Ichabod quickly realizes that stopping Headless is just the beginning, as the resurrected rider is but the first of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.”
From what I can see, you can only get episodes 6 – 13 at the homepage. You can reserve the discs at Netflix.
My relationship with this one: Watched the first few episodes but the series didn’t catch me.

The Blacklist | NBC | Mondays | 10/9c | My favorite show of the season won’t be back until Feb. 24th.
From the homepage:
“For decades, ex-government agent Raymond “Red” Reddington (James Spader) has been one of the FBI’s most wanted fugitives. Brokering shadowy deals for criminals across the globe, Red was known by many as “The Concierge of Crime.” Now, he’s mysteriously surrendered to the FBI with an explosive offer: He will help catch a long-thought-dead terrorist, Ranko Zamani, under the condition that he speaks only to Elizabeth “Liz” Keen, an FBI profiler fresh out of Quantico. For Liz, it’s going to be one hell of a first day on the job.”
You can stream the most recent 5 episodes from the homepage. You can reserve the discs at Netflix.
My relationship with this one: Watching religiously. Best show of the 2013/2014 season so far.

From the homepage:
“This is Fairy Tale Land. It’s filled with magic, monsters and all of the characters we all know from stories growing up. It’s real, and so are the people in it. But unlike the “happily ever after” you may have heard about, their stories continued, and The Evil Queen cast a Dark Curse over the land….This is Storybrooke. It’s a quiet, little, New England town filled with people who go about their everyday lives with no idea who they really are. The Queen’s Curse has trapped them here and placed her in near-complete control. They have no real memories and no real hope.”
You can see the last 5 episodes, and get recaps of all 11 existing episodes, here.

From the homepage:

Witches of East End | Lifetime | Sundays | 10/9c | Episodes 1-13 of season 1 have aired. Season 2 has been greenlighted.
From the homepage:
“Inspired by Melissa de la Cruz’s New York Times best-selling novel, “Witches of East End” centers on the mysterious Beauchamp family: free-spirited artist Joanna (Ormond) and her two grown daughters, wild-child bartender Freya (Dewan Tatum) and shy librarian Ingrid (Boston), both of whom are unaware that they are gifted (and cursed) with a magical birthright.”
My relationship with this one: Have not watched. Unless I hear a strong recommendation, I probably won’t.

American Horror Story – Coven |  FX   |  Wednesdays | 10/9c | Season finale TONIGHT, Jan 29th.
Season 1: Murder House, and season 2: Asylum – are available on Netflix streaming. Season 3 will likely become available in Nov/Dec 2014.
My relationship with this one: I was blown away in the first episode by how willingly (even eagerly) it crossed TWO taboo lines. This felt like an extremely female-centric season, which was cool by me, but I’m uncertain about how it has played to the other half of the population. There was an awful lot of talent in the performances. and much more humor than I would have imagined possible in the writing.  I’m not sure I can say that I “like” AHS, but I can’t turn away from it either.

Dracula | NBC | Fridays | 10/9c | The show had a 10 episode run. Talk is that it will not be picked up for another season.
All 10 episodes are currently available via streaming at the homepage.
My relationship with this one: I never watched an episode, and with rumors of its cancellation going around, I’m not likely to. Did I miss a good one here?

*****

Grimm | NBC | Fridays | 9/8c | Looks like the 13th episode of season 3 will air on Feb. 28th.
Seasons 1 & 2 are available on Netflix discs.
From the homepage:
“Grimm” is a drama series inspired by the classic Grimm Brothers’ Fairy Tales. After Portland Homicide Detective Nick Burkhardt discovers he’s descended from an elite line of criminal profilers known as “Grimms,” he increasingly finds his responsibilities as a detective at odds with his new responsibilities as a “Grimm.”
You can see season 3’s episodes 7 – 11 here. I can’t find episode 12. I can’t find a confirmation that the series has been picked up for a 4th season either.
My relationship with this one: I still regret not sticking with this one after catching the first few episodes in its first season. I look forward to marathoning it, but I wish it would come to streaming!

Stuff on The CW:

I don’t watch this network, but it appears to be overflowing (like a heaving bosom from a tight bodice) with paranormal / horror shows. Here’s a few highlights, but if these kind of programs are your thing, it’d be best for you to explore the whole CW line-up.
